How do I find a particular book of poetry or prose from Wisconsin?
Click on the "WI Poetry Books" for poetry or the "WI Fiction/Non Fiction Books" for prose button at the top of the page. This will take you to the appropriate list of titles. Books are listed alphabetically by the last name of the poet or writer. Under each title you'll find a description of the content of the book, an excerpt from a review or a promotional blurb, its ISBN number and cover price. Click on "Order" if you wish to purchase the book.
Eventually you will be able to register your book on line using a credit card. For the time being, please click on "Title Registration Form" above, and print a copy of it from your computer. You may send this with a check for $10 to WisconinPoet.com, 315 Water St., Cambridge, WI 53523. Use this address for both WisconsinPoet.com and for WisconsinAuthor.com. If you would like to have the cover displayed next to the description send a total of $20. This registration is good for two years. In addition 30% of the cover price will be deducted for each sale through the web site. This covers costs of maintaining the site, paying for credit card services and advertising the site to assure good traffic. The price is the same for chapbooks or books regardless of their cover prices.
To post the cover, send an Zip file to santerra@aol.com when you send in your registration form.
At the end of two years the listing will be renewed without fee if there have been any sales of the book during that time. If not you will need to submit an additional $10 ($20 with cover) to keep the listing current.
There is a special rate for publishers to encourage them to place their backlist on the site. Publishers can post books published prior to 2004 for $5 for listing and $10 for listing and cover. This offer is limited to publishers of multiple poets and writers only.
These charges are minimal compared to amazon.com and bn.com. It's true that they are national, but this site will be generating traffic to your listing, they don't, and will be attracting libraries and schools who cannot get most Wisconsin books through the distributors they use.
Simply click on the word "Order" across from the title and provide the necessary information. The order will be processed immediately and the book will be sent to you direct from its publisher. Often this is done by "media rate" postage, so allow a week to ten days for delivery. If you prefer to pay with a check or use purchase orders and need to be billed, send to: WisconsinPoet.com, 315 Water St, Cambridge, WI 53523 or WisconsinAuthor.com, 315 Water St, Cambridge, WI 53523. If you do not receive your order promptly phone 1-800-7-TO-KNOW or e-mail santerra@aol.com.
Each week this site will list regional/national contests offering prizes of $250 or more. Most require a reading fee. This is strictly a service for poets and writers there is no connection between this site and the publication or organizations putting on the contests. Most are established and well recognized, however you do enter at your own risk. To see an up-to-date listing click on contests at the top of the page.
Simply click on "Wisconsin Book Publishers" or "Wisconsin Magazine Publishers" at the top of the page. Each will be listed alphabetically. We suggest your reading their guidelines before submitting materials. These often can be found be searching the web or calling the publication and requesting they send them to you.
“There are some basic distribution problems for books from Wisconsin authors and publishers,” says John Lehman, managing partner of Zelda Wilde Publishing and founder of Rosebud magazine. "It’s hard for poets to sell books outside of their immediate area and libraries and schools don’t buy many books of fiction and nonfiction by Wisconsin writers simply because national distributors are reluctant to handle them."
Lehman introduced WisconsinPoet.com and WisconsinAuthor.com at this years Wisconsin Book Festival. The sites are intended to be a single-source marketplace, like amazon.com but geared to a Wisconsin audience. For example, visitors to WisconsinPoet.com will be able to purchase poetry books using their credit cards, view a comprehensive list of the Wisconsin book and magazine publishers who feature poetry and review a list of national poetry contests, posted daily, that offer $250 or more prizes.
"I’ve checked with Wisconsin writers and publishers and everyone I’ve talked to seems quite enthusiastic about this,” Lehman says. “I’m trying to keep it simple, at least at first, and then build upon it as it grows in use and popularity. Though new listings will mostly be posted by individual writers and poets, there’s a special program for Wisconsin publishers to list all their backlist titles ($50 TO LIST 10 TITLES PUBLISHED BEFORE 2004, $5 ADDITIONAL FOR EACH COVER). WisconsinPoet.com and WisconsinAuthor.com should be particularly useful for libraries and schools. Not only can they easily order what they want but they will receive a lower price than if they went through Baker and Taylor or another distributor.”
